The history of Tea Dances at the Roman Lakes
After Mellor Mill was destroyed by fire in 1892, the millponds that now form the Roman Lakes were transformed into a pleasure resort complete with boating on the lake, woodland walks, penny slot machines, a lakeside Tea Rooms and live music.
The original dances had their own Roman Lakes Select Orchestra and a large open air dance floor by the lake. After being enthralled by tales of these magical early Tea Dances of the 1920s, 30s and 40s, we were inspired to resurrect the musical evenings and have been running the Tea Dances again since 2012.
